When money changes, life changes, and when life changes, money changes.
In the late 1990s, while I was still a practicing Certified Financial Planner®, I was struck by all of the stories of windfalls-gone-wrong. For some reason, when people won the lottery or received large insurance settlements or inheritances, their stories often took unfortunate turns. I wanted to figure out why, and I wanted to do something about it.
Sudden Money: Managing a Financial Windfall (Wiley 2000) was the result of my initial examination of the challenges of having to manage (or learning you will have to manage) an amount of money you are not used to managing. Ultimately, I discovered that although it may appear to be money that has changed, the reality is that life has changed. Fortunately, there’s plenty you can do to ease out of what life once was into what it will be.
To commemorate the relaunching of this website, with you as its focus, I’d like to share the original Sudden Money book with you.
What Sudden Money Can Do for You
Every person reading this will experience at least one major life event. Divorce, the death of a spouse, retirement, an inheritance – whatever it is, it will affect far more than your bank account.
Sudden Money explains how you can enhance the way you move through life’s many changes by helping you:
- See the dynamics of change by slowing down and paying attention to your experience, rather than trying to “get it over with.”
- See the universality of your experience. Even though your situation is unique because you are unique, you can still take refuge in the stories of those who have come before you and offered wisdom.
- Get comfortable with uncertainty. There’s no time like the present to make friends with an undercurrent of every day of our lives–uncertainty.
